SOWK 679 Practice Skills-Leadership in Human Service Organizations-
Dr. Jane Matheson
SOWK 679 provided practical knowledge and practice in three key areas, 1)structure and management of human service organizations, 2) Understanding and managing finances and 3) understanding people issues. The assignments below gave me the opportunity to practice in the development of a strategic plan and writing a grant for funding. In my previous position I was the liaison for our region with two community based organizations that receive funding to provide services to chronically mentally ill clients in our community. I chose to use these organizations, with their permission, to create the assignments. I was able to share these assignments with them and they were able to utilize the information in their organizations. I found the sections on strategic planning and governance extremely helpful.
I was also able to utilize all of information and reflect on how I was able to assist the non- profit organizations I was working with. I was also able to share the valuable resources that were introduced to me to assist them in their ongoing development as valuable organizations in our community.

679.10 Maximizing staff Performance through Supervision- Dr. Jane Matheson
SOWK 679.10 provided me with practical knowledge in relation to supervision. I learned about different types of supervision, models of supervision and different supervisory styles. I will use this knowledge to strengthen my own supervisory skills and abilities as well as empower others in my organization to develop their own way of providing supervision to employees. This course offered many techniques and practical applications for supervision such as conflict resolution, story telling, the importance of supervisory contracts and ways to strengthen supervisory relationships.
Our group project focused on exploring the importance of relationships within supervision. The powerpoint presentation is below. The process of developing the final product was inspiring and educational. This gave me the opportunity to work alongside my classmates from across the country and collaborate and learn from one another. This was a true example of shared leadership.
Our second assignment allowed me the opportunity to practice dealing with supervisory challenges that were presented in a case study. I have also attached this assignment for your review.
Above all I aspire to provide inspirational supervision to supervisees and continue my growth and learning throughout my journey as a supervisor. "Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be ." - Ralph Waldo Emmerson
