The Prince Albert Family Treatment Centre- Learning into practice.
My Practicum was the beginning of a new and exciting career change. My practicum experience was as the project coordinator of a new family treatment centre that is opening in our region Spring 2013. In November of 2012 I was the successful candidate for the position of the Manager of Family Treatment and Acquired Brain Injury Service for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. I am excited about the opportunity to be part of building a provincial- wide program and service for women and their children from the ground up. We will be providing a six week inpatient program for addiction and related issues. Our goal for the program is to assist women in their recovery from addiction however they define success.

This opportunity has provided me many chances to utilize the knowledge and skills I have acquired in the MSW specialization in leadership in human services program. It has challenged me to implement my framework into practice by utilizing all four pillars of the person, the environment, knowledge and skills and the plan.
The person- I am currently focusing on the development of strong relationships with the new team that we have hired. I aspire to inspire my team members and empower them to be part of the development of a great program and service that we are taking on together. I envision the next year to include the development of our relationships that will be full of trust, respect, collaboration, learning together, vulnerability, some conflict but overall mutual caring and growth.
The environment- I have learned a lot about managing pressures from both above and below in the last few months. I will continue to press forward with the goal of opening our doors to potential families very soon! We have committed to honoring diversity in our workplace through training, hiring practices and building a culture of acceptance and valuing all of the different skills, knowledge and experience that we bring to the program. We are an eclectic bunch of women of varying, ages, cultural identities and skill sets. I look forward to our learning from others. We aspire to build networks and partnerships in the addictions community and internally, collaborate and empower one another as we enter into this journey.
Knowledge and Skills- This is a time of great opportunity to learn and grow as we face challenges, obstacles, successes and questions/ situations we will not have the answers for. For the next year I will focus on the implementation of best practice, the development of a strong evaluation component to our program and empowering others in supervision and team development.
The Plan- As one work plan is coming to a close, a new strategy/ plan is required for the implementation of the months of preparation we have completed. In between we will remember to celebrate our progress. I aspire to collaborate with my team to develop a clear and consistent plan that will insist on accountability from all. I am committed to leading by example.
