SOWK 665- Influencing Social Policy Development- Jake Kuiken
My Learning from SOWK 665 Social Policy
I understand that social policy has an impact on all Social Work Practice and in the design of social health, justice and education programs in Canada. This course was a great learning opportunity for me to explore how social policy impacts practice and the role of social workers to advocate and influence new and existing policy in our communities, provinces and country.
This was the first time I ever took the opportunity to think about the historical and philosophical influences on the development of social policy.
Our assignment allowed us to analyze a social policy in- depth. Our group was able to compare the social assistance policies across the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario. We were able to explore the differences between the provinces and develop a proposed new policy utilizing the best elements of all three. We used our collective practice wisdom and resources to recommend changes. The attachment is below.
We explored the development of our new policy with a social justice lens. It allowed us the opportunity to give some thought as to how we can influence social policy at all levels and ideally affect change. At a municipal level I was able to participate in a policy change around smoking bylaws. This was a positive experience and showed me the importance of getting involved in influencing social policy, even if it is in small ways.
I have also attached my journal entries from this course for your reference.
