693- Research as a Foundation for Leadership- Dr. Jennifer Hewson
SOWK 693 was instrumental in explaining different research designs and the differences between qualitative, quantitative and mixed method studies. I was given the opportunity to utilize this new knowledge by exploring leadership research. This helped me to inform my own framework of leadership as well as understand how research assists in informing practice.
Research can also assist an organization or a leader to demonstrate accountable to funders and service users and to their own profession. This course assisting me in understanding the differences between research and evaluation. We also learned about the basics of needs assessment and environmental scans and how this information can be used to design and change programs.
I was given the opportunity through our assignments to review literature and critically reflect the information that was provided. The information can be used to inform practice and program design.
Ethical considerations were also discussed when engaging in social work research.
I have attached the assignments below.
Evidence of learning into practice:
I was fortunate to be enrolled in SOWK 693 during my practicum placement. I was able to utilize my new found skills in understand how to access research and critically analyze data to inform practice decisions and build a business case for funding. During my practicum I was successful in using my article review to successfully lobby for additional funding to staff a full-time nurse at the family treatment centre. The research supported that women presenting to treatment identified unmet health needs as one of their primary goals for treatment. Providing this evidence assisted us in improving our staffing compliment and meeting a need of the women we will be serving in the centre.
I was also able to find evidence based practices to inform programming. Stephanie Covington has developed an evidence based program for women and substance use that addresses gender specific issues for women in their recovery.

695- Becoming an Evidence Based Leader - Dr. Robbie Babins-Wagner
SOWK 695 explored the utilization of research in practice by giving me the opportunity to collect and utilize research studies to support or reject the use of dialectical behavioral therapy in a counseling program. This real life example allowed me to learn more about different research methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) and how they should be used in practice to make program decisions. We were also able to learn more about data collection within an organization and how it can inform practice and program decisions. Dissemination of research information is also essential for communicating evidence based research findings that will impact funding opportunities and being able to communicate program changes or outcomes to staff.
I found this course to be a very practical and hands on approach to learning more about research and how it can be used within a program or organiza
