"Life (Leadership) is about the journey not the destination."

Who Am I?
My name is Dori Gaudet. I am a social worker registered to practice in Saskatchewan and I am employed by the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. I have been working in the human service field for the past eighteen years and have been employed with the health region for the past eleven years.
I started my career in human services in 1995 after I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts - majoring in sociology. I was fortunate enough to secure three part- time positions, one with the local school division as an educational assistant, one in a women's correctional facility and one working in a sexual health clinic as an outreach worker. The sexual health clinic was the place I decided I wanted to become a social worker. I witnessed many of my clients up against many barriers and saw how they suffered from the results of oppression because of their race, gender, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. I wanted to help the clients that presented to the clinic and I knew I needed more skills to do so.
In 2004 I graduated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Social Work. During those nine years, life for me changed. I was now a wife and a mom of two beautiful daughters. I also had the fortune to experience work as a mental health counsellor in a First Nations Community for five years followed by a position as a health promotion coordinator with a focus on health education, healthy public policy and community development for four years.
With a variety of experiences and opportunities in the human service field, I entered into a supervisory role with a community program designed to serve clients with moderate to severe brain injuries in 2005. I was excited to again provide front line services to clients and I soon experienced a steep learning curve that came with my supervisory responsibilities. Those responsibilities grew and in 2011 I was leading the community mental health rehabilitation and residential programs within our health region in addition to the acquired brain injury programs. Again it felt like it was time to go back to school and learn more. However, this time it would be more about LEADERSHIP in hopes to better equip myself to become the leader I wanted to be.
So in the summer of 2011 I entered the Master of Social Work- leadership in human services specialization at the University of Calgary with the hope of expanding my knowledge and skills in leadership in order to improve my ability to facilitate change and lead others in my organization and community.
When I entered the MSW program I did not know where this journey would lead me...... I must say I never would have guessed the paths I have travelled......and although I seem that I am getting closer to my destination I feel that it is only the beginning of a long exciting journey of learning and growing. I am choosing to enjoy the journey and trust that the road will take me where I am intended to be!
